2.2.6 Attitudinal development

ATTITUDINAL DEVELOPMENT

ATTITUDINAL DEVELOPMENT is one of the main fuels that determine not only the continuity or discontinuity of sports practice, but also the quality of the sports experience.

✅ The ATTITUDE is decisive. It is the way in which you prepare yourself in the face of the various situations that you have on a day-to-day basis. And for a coach, it is the most important part. If your coach considers that you do not have a good attitude, it will be difficult for you to play. Without the right attitude, you will not improve, you will not progress, you will not perform well, and you will not enjoy yourself.

✅ When it comes to talking and working on attitude, it is essential to speak about thoughts. Your attitude depends on your thoughts. Your thoughts, even if they are not tangible, have consequences. Ask yourself if your thinking is being useful, if it helps you solve what you are doing.

THOUGHT is like a language. Your performance will be influenced by the way you speak to yourself.

✅ Remember the concept we saw in section 2, about the:

THOUGHT – EMOTION – BEHAVIOR = Result chain.

Positive thoughts generate positive emotions and all this usually leads to positive actions”

(Diego and Sagredo, 1992).

Attitude is understood as a state of mind, and as such, it is transitory. You can have an optimal attitude to manage a specific situation at one time, and a different attitude for that same situation at another time. So, your attitude can vary. The attitude does not come standard, it is something that is worked on. Although coaches have a great influence, you, as a player, can work on and improve it.
